<h2>Architectural Vs. Artificial Intelligence in Golf Design</h2><p>Artificial intelligence (AI) may be the newest tool in architectural visualization today. </p><p>But the most important ingredient in AI-generated imagery isn’t the software.<br></p><p>It’s still the architect.</p><p>That realization took me back to the first week of college.</p><p>One of our earliest assignments in landscape architecture school was simple: sit outside on campus and sketch what you see. I remember sitting there with my sketchbook, feeling completely out of my depth. I had never been a confident sketcher, and my professor was blunt. If you couldn’t learn how to communicate your ideas through drawing, she warned, landscape architecture might not be the right profession for you.</p><p>At the time, it felt more discouraging than motivating. Drawing had always been a weakness for me. While other students seemed comfortable sketching perspective views, I struggled to translate what I saw in my head onto paper. For a while I wondered whether that limitation might actually hold me back in the profession.</p><p>But architecture — and particularly golf course architecture — has always been about design visualization: communicating ideas for golf courses that don’t yet exist.</p><p>Over time, I began discovering different tools that helped bridge that gap.</p><h2>Design Communication Through Visualization</h2><p>The first was Photoshop. Not long after graduating, I learned how to create photo montages that blended existing site photography with design ideas. Those early golf course visualizations gave me a way to show clients how proposed changes might look from a real golfer’s perspective.</p><p>It was a practical solution that helped me keep moving forward professionally as I continued to improve my drawing.</p><p>Eventually, drawing became something I genuinely enjoyed.</p><p>A major turning point came when I met <a data-mce-href="https://pangaeagolf.com/blog/sketchbook-post" href="https://pangaeagolf.com/blog/sketchbook-post" title="Sketchbook Post" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Terry Storm</a>, one of the most gifted perspective sketch artists I’ve ever encountered. Terry had produced sketches for several prominent golf course architects over the years, including Ron Fream at Golfplan. When he visited our office, he would sit quietly at a drafting table, transforming our green detail plans into dramatic perspective sketches.</p><p>Watching him work was fascinating.</p><p>He would study a finished construction drawing — a two-dimensional green detail showing contours, drainage, and bunker edges — and mentally reconstruct how that space would appear in perspective. Within a few hours, he could produce an image that felt alive. The sketches were polished but gritty, expressive but precise. Terry often worked with little more than a pencil and a sheet of matte Mylar. The simpler the toolkit, the easier it is to restock, practice, and refine your craft. Your tools become extensions of the hand and mind rather than relying on software to simulate effects.</p><p>And finally, repetition. While working on projects in Vietnam and Japan during my time at Greg Norman Golf Course Design, regular travel wasn’t possible.</p><p>Instead, our field teams sent drone footage and site photographs. The results were often cartoonish or architecturally nonsensical. That efficiency doesn’t replace architectural thinking — it actually creates more room for it, allowing greater focus on intentional design decisions.</p><h2>Creating Clarity for Golf Course Clients</h2><p>And the client reaction has been remarkable.</p><p>When a group sees a before-and-after golf course renovation visualization that looks convincingly real, the response is often immediate. For many people, the connection between plan drawings and real-world experience isn’t intuitive.</p><p>Visualization bridges that gap.</p><p>When people can see a proposed change through the same perspective they experience the course, something important happens. The idea stops feeling abstract. It’s about helping people clearly understand what the future of their course could be.</p><h2>Architectural Intelligence (AI)</h2><p>Technology has changed the tools we use to do that. It can accelerate the process and add remarkable realism to architectural concepts.</p><p>But the ideas still originate in the architect’s mind.</p><p>The framework is still crafted by hand.</p><p>The technology simply helps translate those ideas into images others can understand more clearly.</p><h2>Crafted by hand. <h2>Why the Best Master Plans Don’t Need to Be Sold</h2><p>If your board is discussing how to "sell" the master plan or "get it approved," pause.</p><p>Those phrases are common in private club governance. They sound confident, strategic, and experienced, but they should raise concern.</p><p>A golf course master plan should not depend on persuasion tactics or political choreography to be legitimate. If approval feels like something that must be "sold," then clarity is lacking, and alignment might be an illusion.</p><p>Experienced architects do not have to "sell" the master plan. They do not have to outmaneuver a discerning membership or a stakeholder group. They create clarity first; only then does alignment follow as the natural progression. That distinction is important.</p><h2>The Seduction of Selling</h2><p>When "getting it through" becomes the objective, energy shifts toward the path of least resistance, which may sell the club short of its potential. Or the focus shifts toward optics rather than clarity, tantalizing the viewer without a full understanding of what the vision is or isn't. Renderings become more dramatic. Language becomes carefully curated. But tools are meant to illuminate — not to compensate.</p><p>Transformative visuals can create emotional momentum before technical clarity has formed. The room can be seduced before it fully understands what it is committing to. That is not alignment. That is acceleration, and without clarity, it is fragile.</p><p>Clubs should be wary of being "sold" before clarity exists. Because once renovation is complete, there is no easy undo button.</p><p>A well-thought-out master plan should not feel like a grand departure that needs defending. It should feel like natural evolution. A logical next chapter in a course's story. When that coherence and clarity are present, persuasion becomes unnecessary.</p><h2>Boldness Vs. Infrastructure has reached the end of its lifecycle. Safety issues have surfaced. Maintenance economics are unsustainable. In those cases, meaningful reconfiguration may be entirely appropriate.</p><p>Other courses are fundamentally sound. Their routing remains strong. Their infrastructure is serviceable. Their identity is intact. In those cases, disciplined restraint reveals real competence.</p><p>Neither boldness nor restraint is inherently virtuous. The appropriate response is the one that is coherent with the club's identity, its operational realities, and its long-term trajectory.</p><p>The issue is not how dramatic the views are on opening day. The issue is whether members recognize themselves in it. When clarity exists, even significant change feels measured. When clarity is absent, even modest refinement feels destabilizing.</p><h2>Engagement: Signal vs. Noise</h2><p>Most clubs solicit input; fewer extract meaning.</p><p>Signal is a pattern. It is when members across demographics consistently describe the same strengths and the same frustrations. Noise is a preference. It is a stylistic bias. Planning around signal produces direction. Real engagement goes deeper than, "What would you change on Hole 7?"</p><p>It asks:</p><ol><li>Where does the pace of play consistently break down?</li><li>Where do safety concerns repeatedly surface?</li><li>What elements generate quiet pride rather than loud debate?</li><li>What frustrations persist regardless of leadership and committee assignments?</li></ol><p>When those patterns become clear, the plan is no longer reacting to opinion. It is responding to identity. That is the foundation of alignment.</p><h2>Data Creates Inevitability</h2><p>Clarity is philosophical — but it is also empirical.</p><p>When the drainage no longer performs. Or the irrigation infrastructure is at the end of its useful life. Greens are shrinking over the decades. Labor allocation issues persist.</p><p>These are not aesthetic debates. What once felt optional begins to feel necessary.</p><p>At that point, the club no longer needs persuasion. It is recognizing reality. And when reality and identity point in the same direction, approval ceases to feel political. It feels logical.</p><h2>When a Plan Fails, the Club Remembers</h2><p>Many Clubs carry institutional scar tissue.</p><p>A master plan was developed. Committees worked. Money was spent. A vote was taken. The proposal failed.</p><p>Cost may have played a role. The scope may have been ambitious. Disruption may have felt overwhelming. But beneath those factors is often a clarity gap.</p><p>Members may have thought they understood the mandate. They may not have understood what the club was about to become.</p><p>Disruption is part of any meaningful evolution. Avoiding disruption entirely is unrealistic. But disruption without a clear, shared trajectory feels unbearable. Disruption connected to a future members recognize as their own feels intentional.</p><p>The role of the planning process is not to outmaneuver resistance. It is to allow the club to arrive, on its own, at the conclusion that evolution is necessary. Then approval does not feel forced. It feels like affirmation. Clarity and alignment are not just design virtues; they are a form of governance protection.</p><h2>The Architect's Responsibility</h2><p>An architect's responsibility is not to win votes. It is not to rely on the latest fads or the stylistic preferences of critics or amateur authorities on golf course architecture.</p><p>It is not to promise that a project can be "pushed through" the membership dynamics. It is to create clarity, full stop.</p><p>One of the most persistent misconceptions about master planning is the belief that an architect can somehow “get a plan approved.” In reality, architects do not approve master plans—clubs do. The architect’s role is not to guarantee the outcome but to guide the process: helping leadership clarify objectives, presenting options, and facilitating thoughtful discussion among members. When that process is handled well, approval becomes far more likely—not because the architect promised it, but because the club reached alignment around the right ideas.</p><p>It is also worth remembering that master planning itself is a process of discovery. It is not a commitment to a predetermined scope of construction. The purpose of the plan is to study the course, understand its infrastructure and patterns of play, explore alternatives, and clarify priorities before decisions are made. Sometimes that leads to meaningful change. Sometimes it reveals that restraint is the wiser course. In either case, the value lies in the clarity the process creates.</p><p>Sometimes that requires restraint, knowing when refinement is more responsible than reinvention. And it sometimes requires vision, recognizing when the club must evolve more meaningfully to remain viable. The discipline lies in knowing when to exercise each.</p><p>When selling becomes the primary focus, attention shifts to the moment of approval — the optics of launch — rather than the realities of longevity. Prioritizing clarity, by contrast, shifts the focus to the course’s sustained relevance. One measures success by perceived momentum. The other measures it by long-term performance.</p><h2>Approval Is the Byproduct</h2><p>Approval should never be the goal. Clarity is the goal. Alignment is the goal. Approval is simply what happens when both are present.</p><p>If a master plan requires maneuvering, politicking, managing, or selling to secure acceptance, the foundation is thin.</p><p>When a master plan emerges from deep listening, honest data, institutional memory, and disciplined vision, something different happens. The membership does not feel persuaded. They feel understood.</p><p>And when a club feels understood, it does not need to be convinced. It moves forward, not because they were sold, but because the path is clear.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>

If You Have to "Sell" the Master Plan, It’s the Wrong Plan

<h2>Introduction</h2><p>When most people think about a golf course, they picture sweeping fairways, a well-placed bunker, or the drama of a water hazard. Rarely do they stop to consider the mind behind it all—the golf course architect. For me, it never occurred to me that designing golf courses could be a career until I played a course designed by Arnold Palmer (some background <a data-mce-href="https://linksmagazine.com/golf-architects-the-moment-i-knew-i-wanted-to-design-golf-courses/" href="https://linksmagazine.com/golf-architects-the-moment-i-knew-i-wanted-to-design-golf-courses/">here</a>).</p><p>Our role extends far beyond drawing lines on a plan. We’re tasked with creating an experience that balances beauty, strategy, and sustainability. A golf course should stir the imagination, challenge players of all levels, and serve the greater community and environment in which it lives. That’s the true craft of golf course architecture.</p><h2>More Than Design: A Role of Responsibility</h2><p>A golf course architect must wear many hats. We are designers, planners, and collaborators. We study landscapes, climate, water, and soil as carefully as we study shot values and playing strategies. We listen to clients, committees, and communities. Renovations and new builds can range widely—from practice centers under $1 million to full renovations well beyond $15 million (as of 2025). Like many, I needed more confidence in my sketching abilities. It is something I had to work very hard at. During my time with Golfplan, I enjoyed learning from one of the best, Terry Storm. He always emphasized that you must love it to be good, and every pencil stroke meant something; sometimes, less is better. He also encouraged keeping yourself within a toolkit that made the creative process more manageable. In other words, avoid fancy sketch pencils, varied lead weights, etc. Instead, master a single tool that is easy to find wherever you are. Find an easily accessible tool and stick to it. The person who can master a No. 2 pencil on notebook paper will come out ahead of everyone else. <h2>Introduction</h2><p>Proper sequencing is at the heart of any golf course project, as with any successful development endeavor to ensure sustainability, resilience, and cost-efficiency. In this blog post, we will explore the significance of project sequencing and how it plays a pivotal role in maintaining budgets, phasing, and overall success in golf course construction and renovation.</p><h2>The Importance of Project Sequencing</h2><p>I've recently had numerous conversations with potential clients who have undertaken the replacement of their golf course infrastructure, specifically their irrigation system, only to realize the need to address other deferred maintenance later on, like greens or bunker remodeling, tee leveling, turf reduction, partial reconfiguration, safety mitigation and more. Unfortunately, these facilities that have put the proverbial cart before the horse must either work around or pay again for retrofitting their new irrigation system later.</p><p>For example, a complete replacement irrigation system typically amounts to approximately $34.5K (or more) per irrigated/maintained acre. The price is changing as we speak! For easy math, if a course has 100 acres (40.5 HA) of irrigated/maintained turf, the projected expense for a new system would reach $3.45 million. However, by planning and discovering that you can reduce the irrigated/maintained acreage to 70-85 acres (15-30%), you could save anywhere between $500K to $1 million in this scenario. Savings are realized both in the installation and on-going maintenance. When you think about it, identifying opportunities to reduce turf by 15-30% saves water. Still, the size and cost of your irrigation system will also be smaller (i.e., fewer heads, fewer pipes, etc.). The Critical Path Method (CPM) is a technique widely used in the project management industry.</p><h2>How to Find the Critical Path</h2><p>First, list all the project components and tasks using your site inventory, analysis, programming, and project brief with clearly stated goals and objectives. After capturing your scope of work in a Master Plan or Design Development Drawings, you can create a basic relationship diagram to draw your conclusions as they relate to all the dependencies for the different activities and components of the scope of work. The diagram illustrates how the phasing of activities affects your desired budget and timeline. After visualizing the results, estimate the completion times, factoring in weather, scheduled events or intentional delays, and the typical growing season.
